Drawing on more than two decades of data, this BEA working paper explores how different federal surveys measure fixed investment in nonresidential structures and equipment—and how closely those estimates align. While each survey uses distinct methods and perspectives, the results show broadly similar investment levels and shared cyclical trends over time. The paper also highlights where and why discrepancies appear, offering useful context for understanding how investment data are constructed and interpreted across government statistical systems.
