BEAD Needs All Technologies to Succeed

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program is at a crossroads, and embracing a technology-neutral approach could be the key to connecting every American efficiently. While fiber-optic networks have long been favored, the rapid evolution of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and fixed wireless broadband offers a faster, more cost-effective alternative, especially for rural and hard-to-reach areas. By broadening the scope of BEAD to include these emerging technologies, states could save millions and redirect funds toward affordability programs that address the real barriers to internet access. With the digital divide still a pressing issue, it’s time to rethink broadband policy and prioritize impact over outdated preferences.
